Toggle📋 Before You Start: The Pre-Check
- The 60-Day Rule: Ensure your domain hasn’t been registered or transferred in the last 60 days.
- Time Check: Start the transfer at least 2 weeks before the domain expires to avoid complications.
- Email Access: You must have access to the email address listed on your domain’s WHOIS record.
The Step-by-Step Transfer Process
Follow these 12 steps in order to move your domain from your current provider to Dynadot.
| Step | Action | Description |
| 1. | Verify Contact Info | Log into your current registrar and ensure your Administrative Email is correct. All confirmation emails will go here. |
| 2. | Disable Privacy | Turn off WHOIS Privacy or “Private Registration” at your current registrar. If this is on, the transfer will likely be blocked. |
| 3. | Unlock Your Domain | Locate the “Registrar Lock” or “Transfer Lock” setting in your current account and set it to Off/Unlocked. |
| 4. | Request Auth Code | Click “Get Authorization Code” or “Request EPP Code.” Your current registrar will either display this or email it to you. Copy this code. |
| 5. | Log In to Dynadot | Go to Dynadot.com and sign in (or create a free account if you don’t have one). |
| 6. | Start the Transfer | Hover over the “Domains” menu and select “Transfer”. |
| 7. | Enter Domain & Code | Type your domain name and paste the Auth/EPP Code you copied in Step 4 into the designated boxes. |
| 8. | Add to Cart | Click the “Transfer” button. Your domain will be added to your shopping cart. |
| 9. | Checkout | Proceed to checkout. The transfer fee usually includes a one-year extension of your domain’s registration. |
| 10. | Check Your Email | Look for a confirmation email from Dynadot. Follow the instructions to authorize the transfer from their end. |
| 11. | Final Approval | Your old registrar may send an email asking you to “Approve” or “Reject” the transfer. Manually click “Approve” to speed up the process. |
| 12. | Wait & Complete | Most transfers take 5 to 7 days. Once finished, you will receive a “Transfer Complete” email from Dynadot. |
💡 Pro-Tip: Avoiding Downtime
Transferring a domain only moves the “billing and management.” It does not automatically move your website files or email. To keep your site live:
- Do not change your Nameservers during the transfer.
- Keep your hosting plan active with your current provider until the domain is safely inside your Dynadot account.
- Once the transfer is complete, you can update your DNS settings inside Dynadot to point to your new or existing host.
