TogglePart 1: Preparation at Spaceship
You must prepare the domain in your Spaceship account to allow the new registrar to take over.
| Step | Action | Details & Location |
| 1. | Log In | Log in to your Spaceship Account. |
| 2. | Go to Portfolio | Navigate to your Domain Portfolio (or Launchpad > Domain Portfolio). |
| 3. | Select Domain | Click on the domain name you want to transfer. This opens the settings menu on the right. |
| 4. | Find Transfer Option | From the side menu, click “Transfer”, then select “Transfer domain” (under the “Transfer to a new registrar” heading). |
| 5. | Unlock Domain & Get Code | Click the “Unlock Domain” button. This action typically performs two critical tasks at once: A. It disables the registrar lock. B. It displays and/or emails you the Authorization Code (or EPP Code). |
| 6. | Copy the Auth Code | Copy the Authorization/EPP Code immediately and save it securely. You must provide this code to your new registrar. |
Part 2: Initiating the Transfer at the New Registrar
With the domain unlocked and the Auth Code copied, you can now start the transfer at your new domain provider (the gaining registrar).3
| Step | Action | Details & Location |
| 7. | Start Transfer | Go to your new registrar’s website and initiate a domain transfer (usually through a dedicated “Transfer” page). |
| 8. | Submit Info | Enter your domain name and paste the Authorization Code you got from Spaceship (Step 6). |
| 9. | Complete Payment | Complete the checkout process. The transfer fee usually includes a mandatory one-year renewal of your domain. |
Part 3: Final Approval and Completion
| Step | Action | Details & Location |
| 10. | Approve the Transfer | You should receive an email from Spaceship (or the gaining registrar) asking you to confirm or approve the transfer. Click the link to approve it to expedite the process. |
| 11. | Wait for Finalization | The transfer will usually be complete within 1 to 5 business days (it can be as fast as 30 minutes in some cases, but the standard max time is 5 days). You can monitor the status in your new registrar’s account. |
⚠️ Key Checks Before Transferring
- 60-Day Lock: The domain must have been registered or transferred more than 60 days ago.4
- WHOIS Privacy: While the steps above unlock the domain, if you have privacy protection enabled, ensure your administrative email address is visible and correct, as the transfer emails go there.
- Downtime: Transfers do not typically cause website downtime, as they only move the registration, not the hosting. Your website remains online as long as your Nameservers are pointing to your web host.
